Kilikili organises Consultation with children!
January 8, 2010

60 children with and without disabilities, with some from socio-economically marginalised communities, met on 8th Jan 2010 to discuss the issues they face in current parks and what they would like parks to be like. Universal accessibility (ramps, no steps, Braille signages, no obstacles, accessible play equipment), no fees for entry into parks, no keeping children out due to their being badly dressed were some of the issues that came up. What was also striking was the need expressed by older children for adequate space near their homes that is safe and where they can play - they don't want equipment as much as a safe space! These inputs will be circulated to a broader group and then presented to the BBMP. Watch this space or a detailed report!

The paper, accompanied by a one minute film was well received. The concept of inclusive play and a community group spearheading the movement was seen as being innovative and expressions of interest in replicating the project have come from other cities.
